Tales of a Solitary Soul

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

Sometime I wish we didn't have to sleep. Or perhaps 'store' the sleep with no side effects. Imagine, not sleeping for four days straight and then snoozing for the 'x' number of hours to make it up. But Allah(swt) created this system for a reason, a benefit that perhaps we don't understand. Don't get me wrong, I love my beauty sleep but only if I didn't have to do it each night.

I really wish I had this summer off. Ever since high school ended, I've been either constantly working or studying which does tend to take its toll. Well, I do have plans for next summer insha Allah so lets see what cards life deals until then in its attempt to ruin things.

I just noticed this post is a list of thngs I wish for but are not. Oh well, what else are blogs for, right?

Assalamu 3alaikum,

1) Does sleep really make one beautiful?

2) I don't wish I could sleep for 4 days straight, but rather, I wish I could limit my sleep to 4 hours a day, and make the most out my day. Too much sleep is a waste.

It is unfortunate that nowadays, the norm (which is promoted by people in the health sector) is that you must get 6-8 hours of sleep every day (depending on whether you are an adult or child). That's a lot of time not used effectively. (You obviously can turn sleep into an act of worship by making an intention regain your strength through sleep so that you can work for Allah's sake, but you really don't need to sleep for that long). In the Quran, Allah attributes the success of believers to that fact that they would sleep little, and consequently do a lot.

"Verily, the Muttaqun (pious) will be in the midst of Gardens and Springs (in the Paradise) (15) Taking joy in the things which their Lord has given them. Verily, they were before this Muhsinun (good-doers) (16) They used to sleep but little by night [invoking their Lord (Allah) and praying, with fear and hope]. (17) And in the hours before dawn, they were (found) asking (Allah) for forgiveness (18)"
[Surat: Adh-Dhaariyaat: 15-18]

So Allah tells us what to do, and all we have to do is train and push ourselves to get there. It isn't impossible, and if it were, Allah wouldn't have encouraged us to be like those whom he has described. And if Allah says that it is possible, then those few hours that you sleep (e.g 4 hours a day) fulfill your body's right over you. And rest assured that if we decide to please Allah by emulating those whom He has described for us in the Quran, He will surely help us achieve that goal.

Please keep me in your du'a (especially to achieve the above).

Assalamu 3alaikum.

Your brother,
Billo.
1) I hope so...but it doesn't seem to be working for me :-(

2) Nothing wrong with a good sleep. Thought it should be sacrificed now and then in Allah's way.
Belal, where did you get the idea that you don't need 6-8 hours of sleep? You don't need 6-8 hours of sleep every night, and different people's bodies have different needs, but on average, you need about 7.5 hours of restful sleep.

Faraz, you DO need your beauty sleep ;)
What's that? I'm not good looking enough for you?? :@

Yeah well, my mom says i'm good looking ;-)
